I’ve always been enchanted by the engagement stories of other couples. I love to watch the expressions on their faces as they recall and smile at that special moment when they were proposed to, the moment their partner courageously strung together four of the smallest words to create one of the most powerful questions of all time, “Will you marry me?”
It’s always been these stories, the ones of sensational surprise and of epic proportion, that would leave me daydreaming about how my proposal would some day take place.
The Proposal
The air was warm and slightly windy as I walked out of work about quarter past five and headed to my car. It was a typical Thursday evening in the spring and we were leaving for New Jersey the next night.
“Hey, just got out of work…where did you want to grab dinner tonight?” I asked Mike over the phone while rummaging through my purse for my car keys.
“Oh, nice. Are you just leaving? Doesn’t matter to me” he answered unmindfully. We chatted on the phone as I made my way through the parking lot, it was our standard end of day routine.
Suddenly I stopped short. A few feet away from my car, I noticed a vehicle parked directly next to mine that looked oddly similar to the car Mike had been driving. I proceeded to walk up to my driver’s side door, quickening my step as I realized that the other car next to mine was his and, low and behold, he was happily sitting inside it.
Rolling down his passenger side window, he smiled over at me and yelled “Hey, get in – we’re going on an adventure!”…
Last Thursday evening, on our favorite beach at sunset, Mike asked me to marry him and, without hesitation, I said YES!
For the time being, I’m only able to share with you the small excerpt above from our proposal story. Perhaps one day you will read the story in its entirety (or perhaps one day you won’t – can’t promise I’ll write it!), but for right now, I am way too freaking excited and scatter brained to sit still and jot it down.
I will confess one thing to you before I go, and that is that yes, I absolutely had a feeling something was going to happen that night. From the moment he surprised me after work, to the moment we were hanging out on the sun streamed beach, I knew something big was about to happen.
To me, it is this feeling alone – not the place, the time or the ring – that made my proposal story greater than any dream I could ever imagine.
